Clean Energy Results Program Launched at Scituate Solar Brownfield Site

Officials from the Department of Energy Resources and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection attended the kick-start of the Clean Energy Results Program held in Scituate at the new photovoltaic site. Set to be built atop the town’s capped landfill and generate 4,375,000 kilowatt hours of solar energy a year, the project has become the model for the new program.

The Scituate planning board unanimously voted to approve the construction of a 3 megawatt solar photovoltaic array atop the town’s capped landfill.

MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc. , a leading engineering and design, environmental, and construction firm, has been selected to work on the Scituate solar power project. MACTEC will provide engineering design and permit support for the design and installation of the solar array atop the town’s capped landfill.

Green Communities Act Sparks Solar Development on Brownfields

Since the passing of the Green Communities Act, capped landfills have become points of interest for municipalities. Towns, such as Scituate, have discovered the various benefits of turning dormant, capped landfills into solar energy generators. "The governor configured the Green Communities policy details such that municipalities would become the highest beneficiary by virtue of the fact that solar power developers would see them as the most attractive off-takers," said Steven Strong, president of Solar Design Associates.
