MACTEC and Brightfields Development Selected for Scituate Solar Farm

MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc. , a leading engineering and design, environmental, and construction firm, has been selected to work on the Scituate solar power project. MACTEC will provide engineering design and permit support for the design and installation of the solar array atop the town’s capped landfill.

Since the passing of the Green Communities Act, capped landfills have become points of interest for municipalities. Towns, such as Scituate, have discovered the various benefits of turning dormant, capped landfills into solar energy generators. "The governor configured the Green Communities policy details such that municipalities would become the highest beneficiary by virtue of the fact that solar power developers would see them as the most attractive off-takers," said Steven Strong, president of Solar Design Associates.

The town of Scituate is at the forefront of green energy. The town has entered into a partnership with project developer Brightfields Development to construct a solar array on the town’s 12 acre landfill. Once it is built, Scituate will be home to the largest solar panel array in New England.

The Scituate Board of Selectman awarded the contract to build a solar photovoltaic array atop the town’s capped landfill to Brightfields Development LLC.

Brightfields will partner with Solar Design Associates to design the solar array.  “I am confident that Brightfields will bring this energy cost-savings project on-line for the town quickly,” said Albert Bangert, head of the Department of Public Works.

Scituate to Vote on Large-scale Solar Project

Scituate is scheduled to hold a special town meeting next week to vote a solar energy project proposal. The solar array would be built atop of the town's 15 acre capped landfill. Town selectmen gave the town's alternative energy committee permission to seek bids for the project.
