Construction Begins at Elizabeth Mine Superfund Site

Elizabeth Mine

Construction has commenced on the 7 MWDC solar project at the Elizabeth Mine Superfund Site.

The Elizabeth Mine Superfund Site is an abandoned copper mine strattlingthe Towns of Strafford and Thetford in Vermont. The mine operated from the early 1800s until its closure in 1958. During that time, three million tons of ore were mined, producing more than 90 million pounds of copper. Today, the Elizabeth Mine is an EPA regulated Superfund Site that underwent an extensive environmental remediation in 2011.

Brightfields, has been working with its development partners, Wolfe Energy and Greenwood Energy to turn this mineral extraction site into a source of clean energy. Through extensive collaboration, the development team was able to craft a design that maximized energy production while protecting the integrity of site’s remedial cap. Once completed, the 7 MWDC solar project will produce 8,850,000 kWh of clean electricity every year, enough energy to power over 1,200 homes annually. This clean energy production will offset 6,272 tons of carbon dioxide every year, the equivalent to burning 14,192 barrels of oil.

“It is exciting to see construction finally begin at the Elizabeth Mine Superfund Site after years of hard work trying to bring it to fruition” states Kim Martin, Chief Financial Officer at Brightfields. “This project is a great example of deploying clean energy on land that would otherwise have limited economic value. Once completed, this project will be the largest solar array on a Superfund Site in New England. We are very proud of this project and hope that it will inspire similar solar projects across the nation.”
