Elizabeth Mine Project Recognized for Engineering Award

The Elizabeth Mine project has been recognized for an award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Vermont.

Elizabeth Mine was previously listed as a Superfund site due to extensive soil, groundwater and surface water impacts from acid mine drainage that leached from the mine waste materials. Several years ago, the contaminated mine tailings were relocated, and a 45-acre engineered capping system was constructed to provide environmental protection and minimize/eliminate the toxic leachate condition. In 2017, Brightfields helped to develop a 7 MW DC solar power project on 30 acres of the engineered cap, made up of approximately 20,000 panels. The project upgraded a significant portion of the Green Mountain Power distribution system from Sharon to Strafford, VT which helped to improve the reliability of the town’s electrical supply. It provides enough electricity to power 1,333 typical Vermont homes, and offsets 7,136 tons of carbon dioxide every year. All features of the solar project such as the panel arrays, equipment power pads and perimeter fence were constructed on ballasted surface pads that do not penetrate the cap, and do not impose more than the allowed load on the buried drainage system and geomembrane.
The project was a winner at the 2018 ACEC/VT Engineering Excellence Awards Competition in the Special Projects category. The work required extensive collaboration with the Towns of Strafford and Thetford, the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VTDEC), the USEPA and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). This project is an example of turning a previously contaminated tract of land with limited redevelopment potential into a source of jobs, tax income and clean renewable energy for the surrounding community.
